An Open Letter To Hot Toys…

Dear Hot Toys –

May I first congratulate you on an incredible prototype Superman figure – As I’m sure you are aware anticipation for this was incredibly high and consequently the subject matter has a very dedicated and devoted fanbase- many have waited over thirty years for this figure –

In recognition of the fact you are noted for listening to your fans when most toy companies do not I implore you to acknowledge the efforts shown here produced by two very talented artists & SuperFans with a wealth of experience in consulting and producing costumes, art and sculpture based on Christopher Reeve’s unparalleled portrayal.

You’ll find the amendments detailed in the images above to be slight and easily achievable but in doing so making the transition from acceptable to impeccable. These collages were created as a proposed guide and not intended as instructions – please disregard the notes about using provided art.

Look no further than the contents of this blog to see further examples of the work of Chris King in Costume and Sebastian Columbo in Photoshop to further compliment what are already great works.

And make no mistake, these offerings are not intended to highlight any shortcomings or indeed as an attempt at critique, they are merely the goodwill of artists that are seeking the best result for the perfect figure. This is what you are famous for as a company and have demonstrated time and again with your licenses, and on that basis we submit these humble adjustments in the hope you will agree they will only enhance what is already a fitting tribute to the original Man Of Steel.

With best Regards –
SUPERMANIA & Friends…

  1. To bad that most of the people still enjoy the crappy prototype, still dont know why HT release that figure that way? I thinks Arnie Kim Kim is overrated, and i hope HT makes some corrections because for me the figure looks cheap, and the logo for the love of GOD how can they missed that?? good post

  2. Martin can you connect this letter and the images to the Hot Toys facebook wall, similar to how it's visible from CapedWonders. Mr Kim and co need to see this, all readers would comment in support.

  3. I just want to say I am so glad that this figure is being made. I think the likeness is uncanny and looks fabulous. I have shown it to several friends and they agree it looks like a photo, in many instances. Thank you for making this figure available. I commend you and the work you have done on this figure. Christopher Reeve is not an easy sillouette to achieve. Wonderful job!

  4. Supermania does a great job here expressing what I'm sure most fans think. The prototype is well done, (and very close), but the suggested improvements will put in in a class by itself. The fact is Chris' likeness is a tough one to capture in scultpure, and if Hot Toys can pull it off, they will have done something nobody has been able to do in over 30 yrs now. I'm stoked to see the final product. I know it's going to fly.

  5. Hi guys –

Many thanks for the positive notices –

When I started this blog I set myself a rule to keep it retrospective and concentrate on showcasing my collection as it was always intended to be more nostalgic than current.

I broke that rule out of excitement regarding the Hot Toys figure and have courted controversy which was not the intent.
Having seen the prototype it occured to me that with the Superman films being an older property, WB would not neccersarily have as much for HT to use as reference as they would something bang up to date like, for example, Iron Man.

Therefore with the talent on offer and rescource available here through fan contribution all I tried to do was facilitate the passing on of research. This was not out of a sense of entitlement, nor as an undermining of the HT design team and least of all as a condemnation of Arnie Kim's brilliant sculpt.

In retrospect making the letter public was a mistake and my opinions should have been emailed to HT privately in the hope they might take them on board. It was always going to be a long shot at most and unlikely at best so I thought a show of support by fellow SuperFans would be just the thing to legitamise the campaign.

Though there has been some great notices the post has also been used on certain forums as propaganda to trash the piece and ridiculed as obsessive by some regarding the detail on show. This was obviously also not my intention. I merely sensed an opportunity to provide what I considered great finishing touches to an already great piece.

Regardless, I will say no more on the figure 'till its in-hand and review it with the care and attention it will no doubt have earned because whichever way you look at it, its still a great figure…
