‘The Merchandise…’

Presenting an unashamedly nostalgic collection of vintage print ads from the yellowed pages of much-loved Warren Publications Famous Monsters (Of Filmland). Quite how The Man Of Steel had earned coverage in Forrest J. Ackerman’s flagship magazine remains a mystery but as the subjects were so wildly varied it never seemed to matter. Of particular interest to my envious young eyes, however, were the full pages of ads devoted to the plethora of merchandise becoming available with each new Movie/TV show of the era. As this was early days, the Star Wars marketing machine was still gathering momentum but already commanding sections between features. Inspired by its success, by 1979 many other sci-fi properties (among them CE3K, Logan’s Run and Battlestar Galactica) were rapidly following suit and could be snapped up by filling in the convenient order form at the back of each and every issue, unless, of course, you were based in the UK…
Not to be outdone, Warner Brothers & DC Comics collaborated on a similar assault on parents wallets by issuing the ads above to coincide with the release of Superman: The Movie. Shown above restored to their original state, fans were prompted to ‘Choose now from the most spectacular and comprehensive Movie package ever’. As a much less comprehensive version of the package eventually hit UK shores, it would take years for me to amass some of the highlights on offer here but boy, was it worth the wait…
